Manchester United Vs Bayern Munich Preview: Can United Create An Upset?

Against popular predictions, Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich were held to a 1 – 1 draw a fort night ago at Old Trafford by struggling Manchester United.

The fortunes of both clubs in their respective leagues are poles apart. While Bayern Munich have already won the Bundesliga title some weeks back, United are still struggling to finish among the top four that would book them a place in the next UEFA Champions League competition.

It was therefore expected that the visiting Bavarian club would easily crush United’s opposition. But that was not to be as they were held to a 1 -1 draw. United  are heading to the Allianz Arena this Wednesday with something to play for.

Bayern Munich lost their last league match to Augsburg 0 -1. This ended their impressive 53 match unbeaten run in the Bundesliga. Bayern Coach Pep Guardiola was not fazed by the loss but described their second leg encounter with United as a "life or death match".

On the other hand, the Red Devils fared better in their last Premiership match as the thumped Newcastle United 4 – 0 at St James’ Park over the week end.

United’s striker Robin Van Persie has been ruled out of that match due to knee injury. Juan Mata who was a two-goal hero in their win against Newcastle would also miss that match. Patrice Evra would be back from suspension in time to face the German side. Wayne Rooney is still doubtful following a bruised toe he suffered in the first leg of this encounter.

Bastian Schweinsteiger, the scorer of the goal at Old Trafford would be out of action following the red card he picked up in that encounter. Javi Martinez is also suspended while Thiago Alacantara is suffering from a knee injury. Xherdan Shaqiriwould also miss the match due to a tear in his thigh muscles.

Despite having lost their last game, Bayern are still the favourites in this encounter. United are however not seeing themselves as the underdogs. Would they be able to create a huge upset at Allianz Arena this week? Let’s hope so.
