A Year Of Failures In Manchester

The last hope of getting a title this year for Manchester United ended in the pitch of the Allianz Arena in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, after being eliminated by Bayern Munich.

The defeat joins a list of bad results in this season, the first one of the Red Devils in 26 years without coach Alex Ferguson. The Old Trafford team was among the favorites to win the Premier League title in consecutive years, however, the history has been very different.

With five games remaining in the season, Manchester United is in seventh place of the table with 57 points, 17 away from Liverpool, which seeks to end a 23-year drought without being able to win the championship. According to MyTopSportsbooks.com, Manchester City is favorite in the odds to finish first, followed by the Reds.

In the last seven seasons United had won the league five times, but this year was far from the top. One of the main reasons was their poor performance at home, where for the first time since 1978 they suffered six defeats in a single season.

After being thrashed by Reds and Citizens in their own stadium, England striker Wayne Rooney said that their opponents no longer fear playing at Old Trafford, a place where for a long time they were invincible.
Manchester is currently out of the spots for the upcoming editions of European tournaments. It is two points behind Tottenham, which has the last ticket to participate in the next Europa League. It’s been 19 years since the last time the Devils were not in the Champions League.

The team led by David Moyes will close the season with three of their last five games at home, the advantage is that they will face squads that are below the top 10 (Hull, Norwich and Sunderland). United has been the best on the road this season, with 33 points from outside the “Theatre of Dreams."

In the FA Cup were eliminated in the third round losing to Swansea City, while, in the Capital One Cup, they couldn’t win in the semifinals against Sunderland, so being out of the next European tournaments would close a year of failures in Manchester.
