With Manchester United’s current captain Nemanja Vidic set to leave the club at the end of this season, United are already in the market shopping for his replacement. Vidic’s departure might have triggered a sort of exodus at Old Trafford with other club veterans like Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra most likely to leave United at the end of this season too.
Vidic had been a dependable defender for United and his leadership qualities both on and off the field as well as his skills have made him a legend at Old Trafford. Moyes would therefore need to spend some good money in the summer transfer window to be able to get quality replacements for these departing veterans.
Who would fill Vidic’s shoe in United’s central defence? According to latest reports Porto’s defender Eliaquim Mangala is the one favoured to replace the departing captain.
According to the reports, Manchester United’s manager David Moyes considers Mangala as a rock-solid defender and a suitable replacement for the Serbian. The French international is currently valued at €43 million. Moyes is reported to be expecting a £200 million transfer war chest. He faces stiff opposition from city rivals Manchester City in the chase for Mangala.
Mangala was close to a move to Old Trafford during the January transfer window. City attempted a deadline day stunt when they made a double raid for Mangala and his fellow team mate Fernando. Mangala, 22, got is first international cap for his native France in a friendly against Uruguay last year.
With the exit of Vidic, Moyes would be grossly short of top quality experienced players in the defence department and sees the Porto defender as a good replacement.
Should the reports be true, I won't mind us getting one over the noisy neighbours but I personally do not think Mangala is worth anywhere near €43 million. A defender that is worth that much should be a regular for both club and country, unfortunately Mangala is definitely not a regular for France and really not a regular for Porto as well.
A look at his stats shows he has played a total of 4 league games this season for Porto. Thats 4 games out of a total of 26 league games played so far this season by Porto in the Portuguese league. That to me is definitely not the stats of someone worth 43 million Euros.
Do you think Mangala would be a good replacement for Vidic?
